Tuttle completes 14-0 season with title win over Bethany

YUKON — Carson Berryhill ran right, then busted loose for the end zone.

Berryhill ran 29 yards for the winning touchdown to provide Tuttle with a 35-28 triumph over Bethany in the Class 4A state championship game Friday night at Miller Stadium.

Berryhill also came up with the run for the first down to help the Tigers salt away the win, an unbeaten season and Tuttle's first state title since 2005.

Tuttle took the lead 35-28 with 2:21 remaining. Joseph Yarbrough followed by snagging an interception on Bethany's next play at the 2:13 mark.

“We knew we were capable,” Berryhill said of his team. “We've prepared all week and prepared ourselves in the offseason. Everyone plays with heart.”

Tuttle completed the season 14-0. Triston Truelove topped the Tigers with 147 yards rushing on 30 carries. Berryhill ran for two touchdowns and threw for three.

“Tuttle is a great place,” Tuttle coach Brad Ballard said. “The kids work hard. The expectation of work. Parents get their kids to the weight room. It takes a village, and this is quite a village.”

The Bronchos evened the game 28-28 on the first play for the fourth quarter. Sam Brandt hurled a 31-yard scoring pass to Skylar Holzhauser for the touchdown.

Bethany (12-2) was trying for its first state title since 2003. Brandt completed 16 of 27 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Brandt picked up a fumble at midfield and ran for a touchdown to tie the game 21-21 with 9:21 left in the third.

Berryhill found Coby Trevino open in end zone for a 30-yard touchdown strike to put Tuttle on top 21-14 with 56 seconds remaining before halftime.

The Tigers scored on their first two possessions. Parker Ross streaked 64 yards for a touchdown run with 7:02 left in the first quarter. Ross had the first down, then cut back and got behind Berryhill and Codie Wall blocking.

Bode Brooks picked off a Bethany pass to leave Tuttle 28 yards to go to the end zone. Berryhill capitalized on the turnover by running for a 1-yard touchdown.

Bethany tied the game 14-14 on Brandt's 36-yard scoring pass to Lawson Stout at the 2:46 mark of the second quarter.

The Bronchos got on the scoreboard with 2:23 to go in the first quarter. Bethany drove 73 yards in seven plays capped by Brandt's 1-yard touchdown sneak. Brandt threw a 31-yard pass to Skylar Holzhauser before the touchdown.

The game started nearly an 90 minutes late due to heavy rain and lightning the area. More rainy weather caused multiple delays before the game restarted after another hour of stoppage.
