TULSA — Putnam City West’s Ce’Nara Skanes game-tying shot was off the mark, and the celebration was one for Class 6A No. 3 Owasso.
Two years after losing to Midwest City in the championship game, Owasso seniors, Terryn Milton, Mya Bhinhar and LeiloniCulley, all finished their varsity careers as champions with a 53-51 victory over top-ranked PC West.
“That kind of fueled us,” Milton said, remembering the loss to the Bombers in 2016. “You could see it out on the floor; we weren’t going to lose that game.”
And it was Owasso’s three seniors that spearheaded the golden finish. Milton led the way with 17 points, Bhinhar added 11 and Culley chipped in with 10 points.
“It’s taken a long time to get this,” Owasso coach Matt Sweeney said. “Those girls, they deserve all the credit.”
Neither team enjoyed a lead of more than nine points, and the contest was tight throughout. PC West’s Mekayla Furman tied the game at 51 on a layup with 52 seconds left, but Bhinharknocked down a pair of free throws four seconds apart inside the final 10 seconds to put Owasso (26-3) in front.
Skanes and Sharonica Hartsfield both had 17 points to lead PC West (24-4).
