Piedmont shocked the world once.
Can it do it again?
Find out by watching the Skordle Game of the Week this Friday night when Class 5A’s fifth-ranked Wildcats host No. 1 Bishop McGuinness in a massive District 5A-2 showdown.
Both teams enter the game 6-1 overall records, 4-0 district marks and six-game win streaks.
For Bishop McGuinness, that’s not a surprise.
The Irish feature two of the state’s top 2020 recruits in Brynden Walker and Dominic Richardson.
The former is a three-star prospect at outside linebacker who earlier this year flipped his commitment from OSU to OU.
The latter is also a three-star prospect, but at running back. Richardson has committed to play at TCU next year.
That duo is trying to help lead the Irish to the 5A title game for the third time in four years.
McGuinness was the 5A runner-up to Carl Albert in 2016 and 2017.
Carl Albert entered this season as they three-time defending state champ and appeared to be on a collision course with history.
The Titans had the state’s 11-game win streak record within sight…until Oct. 4, that is.
That’s when Piedmont pulled off perhaps the biggest upset of the year by handing the then-No. 1 Titans a 10-6 defeat.
Piedmont’s win snapped Carl Albert’s 40-game win streak.
There’s been no let-up since.
Using defense as its calling card, Piedmont has since slapped around Lawton Ike (52-12) and Guymon (69-6).
Piedmont has allowed just 75 points all season, fourth best in 5A.
The Wildcats have held four opponents to single digits, including keeping Carl Albert’s offense out of the end zone.
Piedmont’s lone loss was 13-7 to El Reno in the season opener.
Since then, other quality wins have come against the likes of Weatherford and Noble.
The Wildcats held Noble to just six points two weeks before the Bears dropped 72 on El Reno. Nobody else has held one-loss Noble to fewer than 38 points.
So, with all due respect to Carl Albert, which will no doubt figure in the 5A title race, this week’s matchup is a class of 5A Titans.
It’s powerhouse Bishop McGuinness taking on upstart Piedmont, the “Rocky” of this year’s 5A season.
If you can’t be at Piedmont’s F&M Bank Stadium, you can still catch all of the action.
The game will be broadcast live on Skordle.com. You can also watch it live on your Skordle App as we’ll be there for every snap from Piedmont, which is one of Skordle’s streaming partners.
Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Don’t miss it.
